The news that Chevrolet might be moving production of the next-generation Cruze to Europe has put a lot of unwanted stress on the shoulders of their Korean unit (formerly Daewoo). Union officials in the country are concerned about a statement made by the GM Korea boss, Sergio Rocha, on November 1, when he stated that the next Cruze will be made in Europe, as well as four other regions.
Rocha also said that the manufacturer has yet to decide which overseas factories will make the new Cruze, so it`s not set in stone, yet. According to union leader Min Ki, "Should (GM) not withdraw the decision, it will face enormous resistance (from workers) [. . .] The next-generation Cruze is the lifeline of Gunsan factory. The plant is flooded with anger about GM, which is trying to cut its lifeline," as would be expected, we say.
The current Cruze accounts for just over 50% of the Korean plant’s production, which has a total annual production run of around 260,000 units. The factory is located in the southwestern city of Gunsan, and it employs around 3,300 workers, who also build the Chevy Orlando and the Lacetti - it is one of three GM plants in South Korea.
