Chevy, Best Selling Brand in January

GM is betting heavily on its star brand, Chevrolet, this year. Proof is the number of ads prepared by the American auto maker for the Super Bowl. The reason is the fact that Chevrolet has now reached a level of popularity it hasn't experienced in a long time.

Looking through the sales figures for the month of January, GM found that the sales of the brand increased by 33 percent (YoY), reaching 125,389 vehicles. The number, impressive as it is, is even more important for GM because it means the brand was a best seller on the American market last month, outpacing long time rivals like Ford and Toyota.

“We are encouraged to see Chevrolet’s momentum in 2010 carryover to the new year,” said Alan Batey, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “Because of our great products, more customers chose Chevrolet in January than any other brand in the United States. In fact, Chevrolet edged out Ford by almost 4,000 vehicles and outsold Toyota by more than 25,500.”

The most appealing type of vehicle for the American customers were the Chevy crossovers, whose sales bloomed to reach a level 36 percent higher than last year. They are followed by Chevrolet cars, which brought an increase of 33 percent and the Chevrolet trucks, which posted a 32 percent increase.

The brand thus contributed heavily to the overall performance of the car maker in January. GM sold last month a total of 178,896 vehicles, an increase of 23 percent. Throughout the range of brands sold by GM, crossovers showed once again the consumers' appetite for this type of vehicles.
