After unveiling the C8 Corvette and the Z51 Package for the sub-$60,000 sports car, Chevrolet has offered two glimpses into the future of the mid-engine model. First things first, RHD is on the horizon for markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia.
The eighth generation, therefore, is the first truly global Corvette in more than 60 years since the nameplate was introduced. A few other countries where they’re driving on the left side of the road include Japan, Macau, Hong Kong, South Africa, New Zealand, and Ireland.
Revealed as a coupe with removable roof panels, the C8 Corvette has also been confirmed as a convertible for the 2020 model year. Chevrolet didn’t offer too many details about the drop-top body style, but a few pictures give away the opening mechanism and the different rear deck. As opposed to the coupe, the convertible doesn’t feature a glass engine cover.
The Stingray emblem on the back of the car confirms the LT2 is lurking under the hood, packing 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque as standard. Opt for the Z51 Performance Package which includes the performance exhaust system, and you’ll get 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet.
The 6.2-liter engine is a small-block V8 that promises to propel the C8 Corvette to 60 in under three seconds, an astounding feat for such a classic design and rear-wheel drive. Part of this quickness boils down to the eight-speed DCT developed with the help of Tremec, a first for the Chevrolet brand.
Customers interested in the go-faster character of the C8 Corvette are treated to Z Mode, a button on the steering wheel which bridges the gap between sport and track driving modes. Z Mode is named after the Z51, Z06, and ZR1 performance packages.
"Our mission was to develop a new type of sports car, combining the successful attributes of Corvette with the performance and driving experience of mid-engine supercars," declared Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer.
