This Is the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in All Its Glory

The Stingray nameplate comes back later this year to haunt the dreams of Chevrolet's competitors. As promised, the American carmaker unveiled on Thursday the new Corvette, "the fastest, most powerful entry" in the lineup of cars that dates back to the early 1950s.

With a design that takes inspiration from a melange of other machines, from the F35 fighter planes to the cars of Formula 1, this new Corvette is the first ever to use a mid-engine configuration, resulting in better road and track performance and weight distribution.

At the core of the car lies a new 6.2-liter small-block V8, a powertrain Chevy says it is the only naturally aspirated one in its segment. The engine is controlled by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, Chevy's first, that comes with the usual driving modes - Weather, Tour, Sport and Track – and adds an extra two, MyMode and Z.

The engine fitted on the car produces a total of 495 hp and 637 Nm of torque, the highest levels for an entry-level Corvette. These figures are enough to push the car from naught to 60 mph in under three seconds (the exact figure was not specified).

This figures can however only be reached when the car undergoes some special treatment. The hp and torque levels can be achieved only when the car is equipped with the performance exhaust, and the acceleration time applies only to cars equipped with the Z51 Performance package.

The new Corvette Stingray will enter production later in 2019. Chevy promises the price for it will not exceed $60,000, which is about the same amount the carmaker asks for the current generation.

That however is only the starting value. As usual, a wealth of optional extras are on the table, more than sure to raise the final price much higher.
