Based on the Holden VF Commodore from Australia, the SS is Chevrolet’s first RWD, V8-powered performance sedan since 1996. Though it shares its underpinnings with the Camaro and Caprice, the SS is what many would call a rather surprising vehicle.
Here at autoevolution we tested the 2014 MY and found out that the recipe is amazing. To mate a Camaro platform with a C6 Corvette engine then dress the whole thing up like a Malibu seems like a bad idea at first glance, but the Super Sport is more than that.

With the 2015 model year, the golden bowtie manufacturer made the SS more focused by giving it a six-speed manual and a Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension system. The 6.2 LS3 V8 with 415 HP and 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) is no slouch either.

According to insider info from MotorTrend, it seems like GM engineers want to take this humdrum but effective performance recipe even further with a Camaro 1LE-like optional handling package. Though the Chevrolet SS 1LE package could be ready for production in just 3 to 6 months, there’s a problem with that.

More specifically, MT reports that higher-ups will need to be convinced by the engineers in order to give the green light for production. If our two cents were on the table, we’d bet that the 1LE will happen ‘cause the package’s bits are interchangeable with the Camaro, which is sharing its Zeta full-size platform with the SS.

As a brief reminder, the $3,500 1LE Performance Package adds the following things on the Camaro 1SS:

  • 20" x 10" front and 20" x 11" rear aluminum wheels with a 10-spoke design from the ZL1 and a low-gloss Black finish
  • 285/35ZR20 Goodyear Eagle Supercar Generation 2 performance summer-only tires, front and rear
  • Performance Ride and Handling suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars
  • TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission with a 3.91 final-drive axle ratio
  • Unique rear spoiler
  • Sueded microfiber-wrapped, flat bottom steering wheel and shift knob
