Chevrolet Spark Available to US Customers from 2012

It was back at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that Chevrolet officially unveiled the US-spec Spark compact car as a 2011 model. However, the model’s arrival eventually got delayed by GM’s rough financial situation, leaving American customers wondering when the minicar will reach the US dealerships.

The answer finally came via Twitter, where a recent post by Chevrolet’s North American president, Mark Reuss, confirmed the Spark will in fact arrive in the U.S. as a 2013 model year vehicle sometime in early to mid-2012.

The Spark is currently selling in Asian countries and has been a very important model for Chevrolet in the global mini car segment.

Jason Laird, executive director of North American product communications for GM also tweeted on the matter: “Spark minicar will give Chevrolet A-B-C-D-E segment coverage for the first time in the U.S.”

His statement is backed by the fact that the new five-door hatchback will actually be placed below the revised Aveo (Sonic) in Chevrolet’s lineup. The Spark fits in the A segment, the Sonic fits in the B segment, the Cruze fits in the C segment, the Malibu fits in the D segment and the Impala fits in the E segment.

The European version of the Spark features 1.0-liter 66 horsepower and 1.2-liter 78 horsepower 16-valve four-cylinder double overhead camshaft gasoline engines, delivering excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. However, full details and pricing on the matter are expected to surface sometime in early 2012.
