Amid Bernie Ecclestone's urging the Force India owner to give Karun Chandhok a shot at making his Formula One debut as soon as possible, Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya insisted it would be with great pleasure that he'll give the GP2 driver a chance to debut in the Great Circle. However, Chandhok would have to earn that drive and convince everybody back at Silverstone that he is F1 material for 2010.
Enthused after a second consecutive point-scoring grand prix, Mallya revealed that his appreciation for Chandhok goes well beyond the usual owner vs driver relationship but insisted that can't get in the way of his business.
However, he did reveal he'll give Chandhok equal chances as all other potential drivers bidding for the second remaining race spot with his team for 2010.
“Karun is like a son to me. I have known him from when he was a little boy in shorts. If I can give him a chance, I'd be delighted. But he has to prove that he is also capable. So I've told him I'll put him in the McLaren driver simulator and let me see what you do. And based on that we'll talk further,” said Mallya according to the Reuters news agency.
While revealing that also A1 GP winner Neel Jani will be offered a chance to prove himself in the VJM02 cockpit – via a simulator, of course – in the weeks to come, the Indian businessman insisted that he's more than happy with his current lineup.
“They (Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi) are loyal and hard working. They are with the team and part of the team, they are doing their best. Unless I have some compelling reason to change, I ask myself why should I change? As of now I am very happy with what I have and the only role open is a test driver role and we'll see where we go from there,” added Mallya.
