Taking advantage of the Annual Report for the recently concluded 2009, the Disney Studios inserted into the documents some rendering of the artwork currently being developed for the sequel to Cars. Scheduled to be released sometimes in 2011, Cars 2 will take Lightning McQueen and his crew around the world, for the "Race of Champions" taking place in Japan, Germany, Italy, France and England.
In all five countries, the Cars will race against world class racers, including, as we can see in this artwork, a Formula 1 car.
The plot of the new movie is based on a mistaken identity case, turning into some type of "spy thriller" as Pixar's John Lasseter said back in September 2009.
Long story short, the character Mater will be mistaken for a top spy named Finn McMissile. The resulting plot will conclude in a showdown at Buckingham Palace.
For Cars 2, Pixar and Disney enlisted Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Cheech Martin and Tony Shalhoub. Several members of the original cast died in the meantime: Joe Ranft (Red and Peterbilt), George Carlin (Filmore) and Paul Newman (Doc Hudson).
As for the title of the new movie, rumors as old as August 2009 point to the Cars 2: World Grand Prix designation.
After being launched back in 2006, Cars rapidly became the weakest film in Pixar's back catalogue, according to Hollywood Animated Films. It earned $461,981,604 worldwide, also making it one of Pixar's worst films at the box office.
