And that’s exactly how the British driver put it at the post-race press conference, thanking his team for the fantastic job this winter and for never giving up on their dream of staying in Formula 1.
One month ago, the future of the Brackley-based team was still in doubt. Ross Brawn then stepped in and convinced Honda to proceed to a management buyout – a decision that was taken after half-of-day of discussions – therefore securing a spot in the 2009 season. Weeks later, his team was dominating the pack at Melbourne, scoring an incredible 1-2 at the finish line (after previously securing the front row on Saturday).
“An amazing day. Some people might say a pity it finished under the safety car but I don't care. I won the race today that's all I care about. It has been a traumatic few months for us, can't say how tough it has been,” said Button after the race.
“This is a fairy tale ending to the first race of our career together and I hope that we can continue this way and I know we are going to fight every moment we can to keep this car competitive.”
“But with the limited resources we have to keep it at the front. The whole team has done a fantastic job and it has to continue. Thank you very much to the team and bring on Malaysia.”
Team’s CEO Nick Fry echoed Button’s words, praising the entire staff at Brackley for this incredible result.
“Absolute fairytale. I just can't believe that we actually managed to do it. It just means the world to everybody, [who have] worked their socks off. The drivers have stayed super-fit over the winter. The car is just absolutely wonderful,” said Fry in an interview for BBC.
“It feels stunning. With everything that all our staff have been through it is just sensational. I can't really put it into to words. It wasn't that easy and there were times where we were having to look after things and of course reliability was an issue because we haven't had all that much testing over the winter,” added team owner Ross Brawn.
