Button Admits Defeat to Teammate Hamilton

Jenson Button did not make a hell of a start in his title defense season in Formula One, as the Briton qualified 8th and finished the race 7th in Bahrain. Additionally, his much anticipated fight against teammate Lewis Hamilton never took place, as the 2008 world champion was more than 20 seconds quicker to the finish line than the 30-year old racer.

When asked about the reports if he looks at the Bahrain GP as a Round 1 win for his teammate, Button answered: “If you want to write that, you can write that.”

The Briton admitted that he still needs to find a proper pace with his new car and hinted that beating Hamilton from the get go was never what he had in mind when joining McLaren. He praised his teammate's podium finish in Bahrain and admitted that he could have helped the team score more points after the season opener had he nursed his tires less during the race.

My pace was very good. But Lewis is an exceptional driver. It would be difficult for any driver to come in and be quicker than someone like Lewis but I am working hard to improve myself in qualifying, to find a car that suits in qualifying, and I am happy with the progress I am making and the team is making,” said Button.

It's a fact that Lewis finished in front of me. He did a better job today,” added the reigning world champion, who insisted that he is happy with how he presented himself during the first race of the new season.

I think we are pretty good at looking after our tyres but there is always room for improvement. We all want more speed and we all want more downforce. Set-up wise the car was okay, there are a few little things I need to look to make it a little bit more my style. But it's a good first race, I'm very happy with it,” added the 30-year old McLaren driver.
