Briatore Warns F1 Needs to Change

The thing about not being in Formula One anymore is that you get to speak out about the things that occur in the series day after day. And since we won't see much of Flavio Briatore in the upcoming couple of years (from an F1 standpoint), we can expect the former Renault manager to criticize or praise the path the sport is going whenever he feels like it.

Which is exactly what he did in a recent interview with Italian magazine Autosprint, as he urged his friend and former business partner Bernie Ecclestone to “fix the sport” in order to improve the show and further cut down costs for the teams.

F1 is very confused at the moment, there will surely be some changes. There will be a push to change things, because the way it is now, I don't see it having a big future. The problem is a bit with everything: the lack of spectacle and unpredictability under normal conditions,” said Briatore in the aforementioned interview.

He also referred to costs, but not in the way of imposing a budget cap for all teams, but giving the big teams the chance of fielding more cars rather than accepting new outfits that have no F1 experience whatsoever.

Also the costs: when we were insisting to have three cars per team, the Federation instead opened the doors to teams who had no budget guarantees whatsoever. I think this was a bad decision.”

There are teams in F1 who are one or two seconds faster compared to a GP2 team, and to be one or two seconds faster, they spend a minimum of 60-70 millions, while GP2 spends three. There's something wrong there. You need to do the cars' technology with the spectacle in mind, not the other way around,” added Briatore.
