Brazil, Daimler's Biggest Truck Market

Despite the very difficult conditions the Brazilian automotive industry experienced this year, the country managed to become Daimler's biggest customer in terms of trucks bought.

The local unit of Daimler managed to sell more than 23,000 units of all weight classes this year, representing a drop of 20 percent compared with the same period of what was the record year 2008. Even so, this decline is much smaller than the ones experienced by the manufacturer in other regions of the world.

The market and the good performance of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil are very important for Mercedes-Benz Trucks and therefore Daimler Trucks”, Hubertus Troska, Mercedes-Benz Trucks chief said in a release.

After a difficult first quarter in Brazil, there was a strong recovery with positive sales prospects for 2010. As a part of our Global Excellence strategy, we focus on consequently further developing our activities in Brazil and the other growth markets Russia, India and China.

Thanks to the large Brazilian contribution, Mercedes-Benz do Brasil managed to keep its position as the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in South America. Only recently, the German carmaker announced it sold 1 million trucks in Brazil alone, since its entrance in the market 53 years ago.

The encouraging numbers made the carmaker hire additional workforce for its sites in Sao Bernardo do Campo. In all, Daimler needs 800 new people.

"The new contracts demonstrate the confidence of the company in the country's economic recovery after a period of world crisis," Mercedes Benz do Brasil said.
