BMW X4 Coming in 2014, M Version Included

BMW is planning to launch a sporty SAV based on the new X3, which will receive the X4 name. The X4 will use the X3 as a base, but will come with its own personality aimed at offering performance, using a scheme similar to the X5/X6 one.

There have been many rumors about the birth of an X4 model, but now a company insider confirmed that the project has been given the green light, as it offered autocar a set of details for the future vehicle.

The idea of building an X4 has been considered by the German automotive producer ever since 2006. However, at the the time the company’s production resources (the previous X3 came to the world via the Magna plant in Austria) didn’t allow this. Now, things have changed, as the new X3 is produced at the Spartanburg site in the U.S., where the capacity can be expanded. Another factor that influenced the decision to build the car was the huge success registered by the X6 model.

The X4 will share the floorpan, drivelines, chassis and other key elements with the X3. However, the vehicle will receive a new design. This will be spectacular, offering the car a coupe-like silhouette.

The vehicle will come with an engine range consisting of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel powerplants. Just like in the case of the X3, all versions of the car will come with all-wheel-drive.

The SAV will also be different to the X3 in terms oh handling, as its suspension will be tweaked to deliver a sportier ride. The X4 will also receive an M ultra-performance version that will be fitted with a next-generation twin-turbocharged straight six unit and will offer a special body kit.

BMW is expected to introduce the X4 in 2014, with the model being a competitors for vehicle like the future Porsche Cajun.
