BMW Working on M1 Supercar. Again

Exactly three years ago, at the 2008 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, German manufacturer BMW, the patron of the event, presented a reiteration of one of its most beloved vehicles, the 1978 M1. Called M1 Hommage, the concept shown in 2008 will apparently become the next-generation M1.

The revival of the supercar, dreamed for so long by BMW fans, might come in a form based on the model shown at Villa d'Este, reports BMWblog, citing a BMW insider. According to the source, a sketch of the future M1, one that borrows elements from the German manufacturer's more recent concepts, the Vision ConnectedDrive, has already been created. The production version, if any, should be here sometime in 2015.

Of course, that sketch might or might not turn into a production version M1. Over the years, we've kept on telling you about a more or less secret project BMW works on, project that is meant to revive one of the greatest hits that never was.

The original M1, with its lines drawn by Giorgeto Giugiaro and with some mechanical inspiration taken from Lamborghini, was a real eye catcher, a supercar of its time, but unfortunately one that was not appreciated as it should have been at its time.

In between 1978, the year of its presentation, and 1981, the year it was taken out of production, only 451 units were build. For some, that number represents the most exclusive Bimmer ever made. For other, it is just a sign that the M1 was a bad idea. Either way, since 1981, no other BMW supercar rolled on this Earth.
