BMW Rumored to Expand X Range Even Further

The guys from Autobild.de seem to have some really high-ranking spies inside BMW’s HQ as they recently wrote an article saying that it’s a sure thing that we’re going to see at least 2 new models in the X family and pretty soon.
We have to admit, they have logical reasons behind their statements but that doesn’t answer every question we have about the future of BMW’s SUVs.

The first rumor is surrounding the so-called X2 model, one that will share the X1 platform that is, in turn, shared with the new MINI and other models in BMW’s line-up, UKL.

The car is supposed to be a direct competitor for the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, cars that are currently unchallenged by a Bavarian model. Autobild also claims that 2015 will be the year we’ll be seeing the new X2 but we think that’s a bit optimistic.

Since it will be using the UKL platform, the car will have FWD and that might pose a problem. However, until it launch date, the Germans will already have launched at least another car that sends its power to the front axle so the shock might be lighter than expected.

Engines will also be problematic. Most likely, if the car will materialize it will use the X1 units but which will those be? Will they include the B38 family or keep the older variants? For a new, bulky model, a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder unit doesn’t sound so good.

One thing is for sure though. Judging from recent events, at least one model will be hybrid. The X5 will receive a hybrid version and we’re positive so will the X6, sooner to be joined by other models too. That is only natural as CO2 emission regulations are tighter than ever.

3 Hybrid versions will be launched in the near future: one using a 3-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine, one with a 2-liter engine and one with a 3-liter unit, all of them on BMW SUVs, at least to try things out. Depending on how they will fare with the wide audience, the X2 and next X1 will be sold accordingly.

Keeping in touch with BMW’s new naming scheme, the X2 should be a coupe-styled SUV or a Sports Activity Coupe as the Munich-based company like to call it. However, we can’t be sure if this will be a smaller X4 or a 2-door version, as rendered below.

Either way, for the X2 to be a proper rival for the Q3 and GLA, it will have to be spacious and practical enough, yet another milestone in its development.
