Just a couple of hours ago we were writing that BMW is considering a recall in a couple of states in the US and we just caught word from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that there will be an official recall taking place in August.
Filed as campaign number 14V348000, the official statement says that there will be a regional recall in place for model year 2001-2005 325i, 325xi and 330xi and 2001-2006 325Ci and 330Ci models registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands.

The remedy will include replacing the frontal airbags, free of charge but no official start date has been released. August 2014 is mentioned as a possibility.

According to the NHTSA, “in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of either of the frontal air bags, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants.”

The same recall was issued by Honda, Nissan and Toyota earlier this year, affecting over 3 million vehicles. Takata, the manufacturer of the defective parts, said that it would help companies replace the devices. What is included in this ‘help’ was not clearly stated but we’re guessing replacement, non-defective parts.
