It seems like after a couple of Japanese car manufacturers have recalled millions of their vehicles for problematic airbags, BMW is now looking into its own cars to see if their customers could be at risk as well.
Apparently, the Germans used the same Takata inflators for their airbags between 2001 and 2006, on BMW E46 3 Series models. According to one of their representatives, the BMW devices are similar but not identical, therefore, an actual recall may not be necessary, as the problem might not manifest itself.

What problem, you ask? Well, it seems like the Takata air bags are at risk of exploding and shooting shrapnel at passengers and drivers. In this regard, Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co recalled 2.9 million vehicles globally on Monday. Toyota has been facing the same issue over the last few months.

Now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has jumped in, asking BMW to investigate the issue in areas of the US with high humidity. That includes Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

"It is not a safety recall, it is a special technical campaign," a spokesman said for Automotive News, adding there were no known safety incidents involving Takata air bags in BMW cars.

The product’s manufacturer, Takata, claimed that it would help regional campaigns to replace these malfunctioning parts made between January 2004 and June 2007. Furthermore, they also offered to replace certain passenger-side inflators made between June 2000 and July 2004.

According to them, the manufacturers that might’ve been supplied with such malfunctioning items could include BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. As soon as an official recall is issued, we'll keep you posted!
