Wednesday, BMW abandoned industry research regarding the safety of a potential new AC refrigerant, apparently, because of the testing procedures used.
This way, BMW joined other important car manufacturers in their refusal to continue researching this proposed, new refrigerant called "HFO-1234yf". The European Comission suggested using the new chemical solution in order to replace the one that is currently used because the latter is considered to be too polluting for today's standards.

"Today we have ended our observer role in the working group, we don't want to say the test results are wrong, but we are not convinced the methods applied are sufficient to achieve a definitive conclusion that guarantees our high safety standards" said a BMW spokesman on Wednesday.

It seems that BMW and other car manufacturers found flammability issues with this new product, the 'HFO-1234yf' refrigerant, supposedly, releasing a toxic and highly inflammable gas in case of an accident.
