This year’s edition of the Geneva Auto Show will see BMW introduce a power upgrade - at this point, enthusiasts may already be thinking about the birth of a new sub-M baby-beast, but, as you’ll see, this isn’t exactly the case. In fact, the Bavarians are boosting one of their oil-burners, but this might not be such a bad thing, since we are talking about the company’s turbocharged 2.0 liter diesel, an engine that accounts for a hefty amount of the sales and is used on multiple models, including the 1, 3 and 5 Series ranges.
The Performance Power Kit, as the German automaker calls its latest muscle development, is offered for both the 177 hp (this is no longer in use) and the 184 hp versions of the 2.0l powerplant.
The first engine’s output is raised to 197 hp and 390 Nm (from 177 hp and 350 Nm), while the latter gets 200 hp and 420 Nm (up from 184 hp and 380 Nm). This has been achieved through the use of an upgraded radiator fan, new intercooler and an ECU remap.
In addition to that, BMW offers an optional Performance Sports Silencer, which uses two chrome-finished tail pipes, with a diameter of 74 mm each. The output premium means that the acceleration from 80 (50mph) to 120 km/h (74.5 mph) in 5th gear has been improved by up to one second.
autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
