Students from the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research came up with a rather interesting concept idea using a BMW X3 as basis. Called the Orange 4 Concept, their creation was developed in close collaboration with the German company itself.
The most important change happened at the back, where the tailgate was changed, showcasing a retractable window that would allow the prospective owners to fit bigger, taller loads than in the conventional car. The tailgate will also open to the sides, similar to the way the Clubman barn doors work.
The roofline was also altered, the car now looking more like the new X4 instead of the old, pre-facelift F25 X3 it actually is. The production of the car was taking into consideration the impact on the environment and how the changes done to the car would help the driver and his family.
A couple of points are rather contradictory, though. They claim to have made the car more practical thanks to the sliding rear window and the barn-style doors at the back but, at the same time, the roofline was dropped, biting into the storage space. Now, we do get that you can now carry things uncovered in the back but this new design is still less practical than the one found on the original X3 in the first place, in our opinion. That’s just us though, right?
