For quite a while now, speculations about the engine that will be fitted on the new F82 M4 and F80 M3 have been going around. One thing used to be for sure though, the fact that the displacement will be reduced and it will have 6 cylinders.
Now, some of the journalists out there claimed that we might even see a V6 under the bonnet of the M4, a thought that is simply crazy. Not only BMW doesn't have a V6 in their current line-up, it would be sacrilege to put such an engine on an M car.

No! Ludwig Willisch, the President and CEO of BMW of North America, was recently recorded confirming the inline-6 configuration for the S55 engine that will soon be released, at an event launching the F15 X5 on the US market.

He was the president of the BMW M division before heading over the Atlantic to head the NA division of the Bavarian company, so we think he knows what's going to happen.
