We’re all eagerly awaiting for BMW to release its hot diesel 5-Series, the 550dX, which will be the first car to introduce the German company’s new tri-turbo 3.0-liter straight six oil burner.
BMW has confirmed the development and added that the car will get a version be tweaked by its M division, but said that this will not wear an “M” badge, as autocar writes. Thus, we’ll get a 550dX, as well as a M550dX (this is not the actual name).
Both will come with a tri-turbo 3.0-liter straight six that delivers 381 hp and 700 Nm, but the latter will also get handling and visual M tweaks. It seems that the M5 diesel project has been canceled due to the face that the xDrive all-wheel-drive system requires a ride height that is considered too generous for M vehicles.
"There are specific reasons why we didn't go with four-wheel drive, one of them being the four-wheel drive system that requires the car to ride higher than existing M models," a BMW insider told the aforementioned source.
