With the launch of the third generation of the X1 last year, German carmaker BMW also let loose the electric variant of the vehicle it calls a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the iX1. It proved rather successful despite being offered so far in a single powertrain configuration, the xDrive30, and that prompted the company to launch another model for the range.
Here comes the new entry-level BMW iX1, the eDrive20, with mostly the same styling, features, and equipment as the model already on the market, but a lower price sticker.

At the core of the eDrive20 sits the same fifth-generation BMW-made electric drive system that powers the first iX1. In the model we're here to discuss now, it comprises an electric motor mounted on the front axle, and a battery with a capacity of 64.7 kWh, the same as in the existing model.

That's a large enough size to allow the small SUV to travel for as much as 475 km (295 miles) on a single charge, which technically is a bit more than the xDrive30 already on the market.

The battery can be charged with up to 11 kW as standard, which translates into waiting times for it to reach 100 percent of about six and half hours. An optional 22 kW can cut that to almost half, while a fast-charging station can fill the thing up to 80 percent in half an hour.

The electric motor of the xDrive20 is rated at a maximum power of 204 hp and 247 Nm of torque. It allows the SUV to shoot from a standstill to 62 mph in 8.6 seconds and can get it to a top speed of 170 kph (105 mph, electronically limited).

The new BMW electric SUV follows the usual path of the Bimmers we love and know and cuts no corners when it comes to equipment level. The standard options list is huge, and it includes everything from the curved display up front, comprised of the 10.25-inch information screen and 10.7-inch control display, to 2-zone automatic air conditioning.

BMW says it will start making the new entry-level in the family in November, and the SUV will be assembled in the same place the xDrive30 is being made, at the company's facility in Regensburg, Germany.

This one will sell for pricing starting at 47,900 euros (which is about $51,500 at today's exchange rates). That's significantly lower compared to the xDrive30, which starts at no less than 54,800 euros ($60,000) for the entry-level Excellence trim (there are three trims on the table altogether, the Excellence, Presence, and Signature).

The new BMW iX1 eDrive20 will sell in the same markets as its older sibling, meaning mostly in Europe. An entry into the U.S. market still seems not to be planned.
