Ever since BMW rolled out its first-ever 7 Series, the full-size luxury car has served as the Bavarian automaker's technological flagship. The problem, however, is that more technology leads to more systems that could malfunction. The G70 is the perfect case in point, with BMW recalling a handful of cars over three problems concerning the interaction bar.
Located on the dashboard, the interaction bar features control buttons that may not illuminate when pressed. But more importantly, the interaction bar may not activate the defogger and hazard lights.
The Munich-based automaker became aware of these issues back in January 2023, following a complaint filed in South Korea. The US market followed suit with two further complaints on March 8 and March 9, respectively. This worrying trend didn't go unnoticed, with BMW initiating an engineering review. Everything from the software version to vehicle build configurations was analyzed. Come June 2023, the German automaker discovered that undervoltage conditions may lead to the issues presented earlier.
Said problems go against no fewer than three federal motor vehicle safety standards, namely 101 for controls and displays, 103 for windshield defrosting and defogging systems, as well as 108 for lamps and reflective devices. A grand total of 384 vehicles are potentially affected stateside, full-size luxobarges produced for the 2023 model year at the Dingolfing assembly plant in Germany. Both the internal combustion-engined 7 Series and i7 are called back.
Supplied by Czech Republic-based Valeo Autoklimatizace k.s., the suspect interaction bars were fitted to i7 xDrive60 vehicles assembled between September 2, 2022 and September 15, 2022. As for the 7 Series, make that 740i and 760i xDrive sedans made between September 6, 2022 and September 15, 2022.
The recalled interaction bars are listed with four part numbers in the report attached below. Said report says that owners will be informed of the recall no later than September 1. Dealers have already been instructed to replace the interaction bars at no cost to the owners.
G70 is the company's internal designation for the seventh-generation 7 Series and i7. A bit on the aesthetically challenged side of luxury sedans, the 7er on sale today is quite heavy. Over in the United States, the rear-driven 740i weighs a staggering 4,720 pounds (2,141 kilograms) despite packing a six-pot rather than a V12. The latter engine isn't even available, with the G70 being topped by a 4.4-liter V8.
Funnily enough, the S68 engine is an M design rather than a regular engine. Still, zero to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) is the specialty of the i7 M70 xDrive. Not available to configure at press time, this fellow is coming to a dealership near you for the 2024 model year with 650 horsepower and 811 pound-feet (1,100 Nm) on deck. BMW quotes 3.7 seconds to 100 kph, which means 3.5 seconds to 60 mph.
