Given the enticing appearance of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) BMW i8, as well as the coupe's dynamic aura, it's not difficult to get overenthusiastic when talking about the Bavarian gas-electric sportscar.
This is a trend we often meet while surfing the depths of the world wide web, and yet we won't complain, since its effects include eye-catching renderings such as the one above.

Coming from digital artist rc82 workchop, the image shows what would happen if BMW decided to enter the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) with the i8.

As we mentioned in the intro, this story is all about getting overhyped, and we wouldn't recommend holding your breath for such a motorsport machine. First of all, the i8's hybrid powertrain means it doesn't follow the regulations that currently govern the German racing series.

Secondly, BMW hasn't shown any intention of delivering a track-confined i8 so far. This isn't by any means the first time when a pixel artist imagines a racing incarnation of the i8, though.

After all, BMW doesn't even have to bother with changing anything about its 2016 DTM program. In fact, the automaker has confirmed it will retain the same eight drivers and four teams for this year's season.

The decision, which was announced back in December, came after the company grabbed the 2015 DTM Manufacturers' Championship. Moving to the 2016 season, this will be the fifth since BMW has returned to DTM. Interestingly, Audi has a similar plan for this year's season. Truth be told, BMW won last year's title with a difference of just 7 points, after the season had seen the automaker being left behind by 217 points.

2016 is once again bringing an 18-race scheduled to take place over 9 weekends. The hostilities are scheduled to kick off on May 6 and end on October 16, which means we have six months of action to look forward to.
