BMW recently updated the i3 for the 2017 model year, and the model received around 5,000 global orders last month.
According to German media, approximately 1,000 of the 5,000 BMW i3 models ordered last month will go to the carmaker’s homeland. While BMW has yet to reveal sales figures for June, or commenting the reported sales result of the i3, a company insider has told journalists writing for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that Germany has accounted for a fifth of the 5,000 orders recorded by the automaker last month.
While the improvements brought by the 2017 model year for the BMW i3 should have been sufficient for the car to receive more orders than usual, German media outlets believe this model’s commercial success is related to the country’s government incentive plan for plug-in vehicles.
BMW’s MY 2017 i3 is offered with a 33-kWh battery, which is enough to increase the cars single-charge range from 81 miles to 114 miles. The 41% range boost is a significant improvement, and some sources claim the German brand intends to enhance the i3 further for the 2018 model year, Autoblog reports.
Germany’s incentive program will bring a $4,400 discount on electric cars, while clients of plug-in hybrids will get a deduction of $3,300. Germany is counting on its automakers to supply about half of the program’s $1.4 billion budget, in a bid to bring more eco-friendly vehicles on its roads.
Germany’s subsidy program was introduced to speed up adoption of electrified vehicles, as the country is behind on its decade-end target set by Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2009. At the time, the German leader announced the state’s goal of having one million electric vehicles on the road by 2020.
Sales results have shown that Germany does not have a chance of reaching the goal with any foreseeable means, but that does not stop the country from providing an incentive program. The latter is expected to bring it closer to the goal.
