BMW’s niche game continues to expand with the electric/hybrid “i” range, with the automaker seriously pondering a brand new i5. After long discussions, the project is about to take shape and get presented to the world as soon as next year, according to a company board member.
“You will see more ‘i’ products and we are in the final stages of deciding what the next car will be and when you’ll see it,” BMW sales and marketing board member Ian Robertson told Autocar. “We will look back 100 years at that point, but mainly into the future,“ he added.

All this makes us believe that the BMW i5 model could be unveiled as soon as next spring, just as the automaker will blow out the candles on its 100th cake. Don’t rush into writing a check to reserve yours yet, folks. It’s December already and they’re only putting their finger on what configuration to go on with, so the biggest thing you could see next year is a clay concept.

So far, the German automaker was said to be mulling over two body styles to wear the allegedly i5 badge. In the blue corner, we get some sort of mini-MPV obtained by stretching the current i3, while in the red corner we see a compact sedan that should battle the soon-to-come Tesla Model 3.

BMW also says that i3 sales are up 60 percent year-on-year, making it the third best-selling EV in the world, while the i8 sportscar is said to be in high demand, with a lot of clients filling up the order list. Seems to be a tough choice on whether to go with the two-box family or the sleek sporty coupe version, if you ask us.

The ‘i’ range is still young, with the small luxury i3 and the high-performance i8 being the only two models separated by a large 5-car void. So, whatever BMW chooses the next i5 to be like, it should be just fine. Either we get the small MPV now or the sleek sedan, sooner or later the blank spaces will be filled and we’ll end up with both of them anyway.
