In December of 2011, BMW and Toyota signed an agreement to facilitate a joint effort on the development of lithium-ion batteryies and hybrid technology. The same period was also marked by talks between BMW officials and their GM counterparts to collaborate on the development of fuel cell powerplants.
Well, according recent information, BMW’s cooperation with GM, while still active, is no longer focused on the field of fuel cell technology, as BMW spokesman Alexander Bilgeri told Bloomberg “We are still talking to GM, but no longer on the topic of fuel cells.”
Our guess is that BMW have chosen Toyota’s vastly superior expertise in the field, as the Japanese manufacturer has had lots of ‘green’ cars on the road for a lot longer than virtually any manufacturer in ‘the game’, so it was a no-brainer for BMW to choose Toyota over GM (if it did, in fact, come to this choice).
