The first iteration of the so-called X6 M used a 6-speed automatic gearbox that was quite fast and capable but definitely not the forte of the whole car. Actually, if we’re to think about it, the transmission might’ve been the worst thing about that SAC, excluding the concept that governed it in the first place.
With the new model, things are about to change. The latest spyshots of the F86 X6 M are coming to us from China and, surprisingly, show the interior of the beast. The first thing we noticed was the gearshift lever.

That was also the biggest surprise, as it seems to be the one BMW uses for its 7-speed DCT gearboxes that can be found on the M3, M4, M5 and M6 models.

What does that mean for the new super sporty SUV? First of all, the fuel consumption in comfort mode should go down a bit but not by a considerable margin. A part to play here could also be due to the diet the car’s been put through. But that's unlikely to play a part in anyone's decision making chain when looking for such a model.

The one change that would make a differene woudld be that we’ll get much faster shifts and a completely fresh take on what an M SUV should be like. Sure, the predecessor wasn’t a slouch either. You can hardly call it that considering it did 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.7 seconds but the new one should be even faster.

Our initial guess would be that the same sprint would be done at least 0.2 seconds faster but a number closer to 4 seconds wouldn’t surprise us either.

The same spyshots also seem to point out that the engine it’s using would have a 7,000 RPM redline. That means the X6 M will be using the same old version of the S63 engine that is just one step behind the one powering the F10 M5 that has a 7,200 RPM redline and develops 5 HP more. Hopefully, we’re wrong and BMW will surprise, fitting the new version of the Sport Activity Coupe, the one making 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque and Valvetronic.
