BMW announced, last week, that they will be releasing a couple of new model variations in the 4 Series range. One of them is the powerful 435d xDrive, the car that will become the fastest 4 Series.
The 435d model will be fitted with BMW's 3-liter, 6-cylinder inline turbocharged diesel engine that produces 313 HP and 630 Nm (464 lb-ft) of torque. The car will also benefit from the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the 8-speed automatic gearbox with Steptronic.

Looking over the numbers, we quickly realized that the diesel is faster than its petrol counterpart. The 435i xDrive with the 8-speed automatic transmission does the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 4.9 seconds, whilst the diesel reaches the same speed in 4.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster.

Comparing the xDrive 435d with the rear-wheel-drive 435i wouldn't even be fair, as the petrol model reaches the benchmark speed even slower, in 5.1 seconds, a 0.4 seconds difference.

The reported fuel consumption is also very impressive, being rated at 5.4 l/100 km (43 mpg) combined, in the European test cycle. For the 435i xDrive, that number is 7.6 l/100km (30.9 mpg).

Looking over what we've found, it's obvious to see that the 435d xDrive will be the best choice of the range and it remains to see whether it will make it to the US or not and if the Americans will leave their preconceptions aside and go for diesels.
