When the BMW E82 1M Coupe was launched, everyone praised the limited-run car as being the best M car of recent years, due to the striking similarities between it and the E30 M3. After 6,331 units of that car were built, BMW decided to pull the plug on that special car and left us with the 135is model to soothe some of the pain.
Most people compare the 135is model to the 1M but actually there's no way that comparison could stand. Sure, they both have almost similar outputs (340 vs 320) and torque numbers (450 Nm vs 500 Nm) but that's about it.

The 1M is a lot more than a powerful 1 Series, it a proper M car and you'll feel it in every corner and at any moment. The 135is has some M Performance bits but it can't match up to the true M.

That's exactly the conclusion Bimmerfile reached. However, that doesn't mean the 135is is not a good car, on contraire, the 135is is spectacular and visceral but on a different level.

The manual gearbox is the one you get and you shouldn't get the navigation system, to keep things old-school, as the car's creators meant. It's also a more comfortable car and looks less menacing, which is a good thing for some people.

The main differences lay in the handling characteristics. Around bends, the 135is will throw you out of the curve if you're not paying attention, thanks to some strong understeer but it's still tail happy if you know how to work it.

However, since the 1M is now gone and getting one can only be achieved on the second-hand market, the 135is is the best you can get at the moment. At least until the M2 comes out, that is.
