BMW Concept Gran Coupe to Turn 6 Series Gran Coupe

The latest rumor coming from BMW's garages is that what was believed to be an 8-series precursor, the Concept Gran Coupe presented at this year's Beijing auto show, will in fact turn into the future 6 Series Gran Coupe in no more than two years' time.

According to BMWblog, the future 6er Gran Coupe, already approved for production in BMW offices, will use the same platform as the current 5 Series (including GT) and 7 Series. It will be powered by six and eight cylinder engines, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Concept Gran Coupe, which will make its European debut this fall at the Paris Auto Show, is 5 meters in length, with a roof 100 millimeters lower than a 7-Series sedan’s and a total height of just 1.4 meters.

“It’s true that the Gran Coupe points to a specific model, a saloon with the presence and elegance of a 7-series but a more dynamic, sporty character: much more of a driver’s car,” says BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk when the concept was unveiled. “We’re convinced that we should make a car like this."

Van Hooydonk hinted since April that the Concept Gran Coupe will likely not be an 8-Series. The revived Concept CS of 2007, is after all, the forefather of the new 6 Series.

“Now we’ve had the opportunity to revisit the CS and update it, and I think everyone inside of BMW is pleased with the results,” van Hooydonk added.
