BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid Concept Details and Photos

Carefully slotted in between the already released 5 Series sedan and the upcoming unveiling of the 5 Series Touring at the AMI show in Leipzig, the BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid was presented today by the German carmaker, confirming the rumors which began in the automotive world in August last year.

The hybrid 5 Series concept features a TwinPower Turbo straight-six gasoline engine, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an electric drive. Unlike all the ActiveHybrids we saw until now, this new drivetrain is a preview of the next generation of the technology, featuring a BMW-exclusive intelligent interaction solution.

The electric motor gets its power from a high-voltage battery pack and develops a maximum output of 40 kW (54 hp). The electric motor is connected to the gasoline engine through an automatic clutch which allows the high torque developed by the former to be available whenever required.

The hybrid system also acts as an energy recovery system when applying the brakes. A hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function and the same
climate control function featured on the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 add to the amount of fuel saved by the new 5er.

A unique feature of the concept is its ability to adapt not only to current, but also future driving conditions. The car reads data indicating a possible change in exterior conditions and the driver's wishes (BMW's words) and gets ready for a change in requirements.

The data interpreted by the system refers to engine and chassis management, data saved in the navigation system on the route chosen by the drive, in other words, abstract elements. No word on what criteria the car uses to interpret the driver's wishes. To better understand how the system works, here's BMW's example:

"Should the system determine, for example, that the autobahn ahead is about to lead downhill, the charge level of the high-voltage battery is intelligently controlled in advance to regain brake energy upfront with maximum efficiency."

The BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid will be displayed at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show.

autoevolution will be attending the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
