Even though we now have the C43 AMG, there's a special spot in our hearts for the 335i. Its place near the top of the 3 Series totem poll has been taken by the 340i, and today we are going to examine the sound made when it's fitted with an Akrapovic exhaust system.
Akrapovic exhaust systems aren't cheap, and they don't necessarily produce the loudest results. But their metalwork is usually as good or better than the original system. That's why many companies, like Renault, Audi or BMW, offer Akrapovic components through their dealer network or as part of special editions.

So anyway, the 340i model is an F31 Touring in this case, which is even better for people who need to carry stuff. Under the hood is something called a B48, still a 3-liter single-turbo inline-6, but one that's more efficient and slightly more powerful. Just how much more powerful? Just ask the M140i, a dark horse of the hot hatch world.

Check out the video put together by Shiftech after they installed the Akrapovic Evolution exhaust on the 340i. Doesn't it have the same clean sound as the original, but better? Anyway, we think it could be a better aural combination than the M3.

There's never going to be an end to the discussion. The M3 isn't great in the sound department, partly due because people compare it to the old V8 model and the C63. But even something as cheap as a Chevy Camaro has its number.

With one less turbo, the exhaust has a cleaner path out the pipe in the 340i, which means you get to hear the six individual cylinders more clearly. No, the 340i isn't going to be as fun, but it's got all the attributes of an Alpina B3, including the trunk and the availability of AWD. With the right set of options, this is a killer Bimmer.
