The 316d ES is powered by a 2.0l four-cylinder diesel engine which provides a mileage average of – get ready - 62.8 mpg (3.7l/100 km) in combined cycle. This allows for a 800 mile trip (1,287 km) without the need to refuel. The entire trip, the 316d will emit only 118g of CO2 every kilometer.
And the performance of the engine was not sacrificed on the altar of environment protection. The powerplant develops 116 hp and 160 Nm of torque. This means you can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 10.9 seconds and top at a speed of 126 mph (201 km/h). The engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.
The BMW 316d ES comes equipped with BMW's EfficientDynamics technologies, as standard. Other highlights include air-conditioning, multi-function leather steering wheel, front and rear ISOFIX child seat attachments and front fog-lights.
In the UK, the Saloon has a starting price of £23,330 ($38,440). Operating costs are low, given the vehicle's eco-friendly attributes. Thanks to a band C Vehicle Excise Duty rank, the 316d costs just £35 a year to tax.
"A 40 per cent tax payer is liable for £1,208 a year. A person in the 25 per cent bracket need only pay £755. Compare this to the award-winning BMW 318d and savings of £524 and £328 respectively can be made," BMW said in a release.
