Block Admits Frustration for Portugal Crash

The sun refuses to come up on Ken Block's street, at least if we are to judge by his performances in the World Rally Championship. After a struggling first year in the WRC, the American driver seems to go through the same troubles in 2011, alternating mechanical problems with piloting mistakes in his first 2 events this season.

The Gymkhana star has done it again in Portugal, where he lost control of his car, crashed it and rolled multiple times in the very shakedown of the event. What's worse, his Fiesta RS WRC was damaged beyond repair, causing him to miss the entire 3-day round for which he had intensively prepared prior to the Portugal outing.

It was very frustrating having done two days of recce and be ready to do event,” admitted Block in an interview with Rally-America.com website. “I worked really hard on the pace notes and Alex [Gelsomino, co-driver] obviously worked really hard too so to have it all blow up there on the shakedown stage is kind of silly. I hate the fact [it was because] of a horrible mistake.”

The crash [has] kind of set me back because the testing we’d done was good, we’d set some good times in Mexico when the car was working and I felt we were moving somewhere,” he added.

As a result of the accident, both Block and Gelsomino have been taken to the hospital for medical checks, but were released after a few hours.

Rally Portugal was the third failed outing for Block this year, following a struggling experience in Sweden (where he lacked pace throughout the event, not being used to running his Fiesta RS WRC on icy roads too often) and several electrical problems in Mexico. His next event in the WRC will be in Argentina, in late May.

In the meantime, Block will become a father for the third time, as his wife is due to give birth to a child on April 23.
