Believe it or not, there are people working in the hauling/delivery business that don't give a damn about the products they ship unless they look fragile and expensive. Reason why a Dutch bicycle manufacturer got inspired to print large HD TV’s on their delivery boxes to make sure their products reach the customers in top condition.
I’ve seen it with my own eyes while working in the field for a brief period - workers shoving boxes of computer hard drives and other components into trucks as if they were crates of potatoes. If they handle electronics like that, there’s no wonder why bicycles are getting an even worse treatment.
This has spurred bicycle manufacturer Vanmoof to find a solution and make sure its products go safely towards the buyers. And the solution was to print a large flatscreen TV on their boxes instead of a bicycle.
“Earlier this year, our co-founder Ties had a flash of genius. Our boxes are about the same size as a (really really reaaaally massive) flatscreen television,” creative director Bex Rad wrote on the company’s blog. “Flatscreen televisions always arrive in perfect condition. What if we just printed a flatscreen television on the side of our boxes? And just like that, shipping damage to our bikes dropped by 70–80%.”
As a guy working in the haulage business, you might mishandle some average goods. What could go wrong? Get a cut from your paycheck might be the top penalty. But ruin a new generation flatscreen TV costing thousands of dollars might turn out to be a big problem for you.
