Electric vehicle charging solutions provider Better Place is moving ahead with its plans of becoming a strong player on the soon to be created market, and announced this week the opening of an operations center in Melbourne, Australia.
The center will be the focal point of Better Place's charging infrastructure in Australia, which will comprise both charge points and the company's radical battery swap stations. The facility opened this week will be a high tech hob of computers which will coordinate everything from charging software to the communication process between customers and electricity suppliers.
“We will be able to send a warning to our customers that they have only, say, 40km of charge remaining,” Better Place chief executive Evan Thornley was quoted as saying by GoAuto.
“We will also be able to tell them where the nearest charge spot or battery swap station is, so they don’t run out of electricity.”
At the end of October, Better Place introduced its battery swap program to the city of San Francisco (after the first one opened in Tokyo), where it will deploy four battery switch stations in the San Francisco to San Jose corrido, to be used by a fleet of electric taxis to be launched in the area.
“The battery switch model is gaining momentum globally,” believes Jason Wolf, VP of North America for Better Place.
“Our Tokyo EV taxi program has proven to be an example to major metropolitan areas around the world, and we are pleased that the MTC recognized this and the Bay Area is taking a leadership position in the U.S.”
