The automotive world has changed a lot over the last 20-plus years to the point that it looks like some of the more common events from yesteryear are now coming back with comical results. Case in point: an old truck backfiring in West Virginia that led to a police investigation today for a suspected drive-by shooting.
It all started this morning when a WVVA journalist was reporting from an apartment complex where a murder had recently occurred. As she was wrapping up her coverage with some B-roll of the location, she said a truck drove by and fired a shot at her. She caught it all on camera, and after watching it, even the police thought it was a shot being fired from the truck.
"As soon as I saw the video, my first impression was that as well, that it would have to be a gunshot. But fortunately the evidence has not pointed in that direction,” said Det. Morgan Bragg of the Beckley (WV) Police Department.
Later that day, the truck and its driver showed up at the police department later in the day, and said that it was a backfire that had occurred. Just to be sure, police are testing the truck for gunshot residue. Looking closer at the video, it would appear that the white Chevy Blazer/Tahoe was turning into the apartment complex, and after the SUV turned, the older truck began to accelerate at which point it backfired as it was passing the reporter.
Needless to say, the chance encounter probably wasn’t too funny to the reporter at the time, but we’re hoping she’s able to look back and laugh at the situation now. Be sure to check out the news report here, which includes the footage in question.
