Autoliv to Build New Plant in China

Having an automotive industry in continuing expansion, China continues to act as a magnet for both auto makers and suppliers, who either arrive in the country for the first time, or expand the existing operations.

Expansion is at the center of the business plan for supplier Autoliv, who announced on Tuesday its decision to erect a new facility in China. The new plant, more modern and built to accommodate the needs of the market, will be constructed in Changchun and will be replacing the existing facility in the same city.

With double the floor space of the current plant, employing 450 people and expected to cost Autoliv $6 million, the plant will be in charge with producing seatbelts, frontal airbags and side airbags for several major auto makers: FAW-Volkswagen, FAW., Great Wall Motor, Bejing Benz Automotive, BMW Brilliance Automotive, and Shanghai GM (Shenyang) Norsom.

In addition to the plant to be soon built in Changchun, Autoliv also operates an electronics plant in China. There too the supplier revealed expansion plans, encouraged by the huge 60 percent increase in sales experienced in 2010. China and the 5,500 people working there for Autoliv were responsible last year for 11 percent of the company's sales.

The Chinese operations expansion is a push by the supplier to increase the size of an already huge business. Autoliv operates 80 facilities around the world, employing a total of 3,000 people. Autoliv manufactures products ranging from safety systems to electronics. The supplier has been recently recognized by the Americans from Ford as one of its best partners, during the Ford World Excellence Awards ceremony .
