Australia Aims for World Speed Record with Aussie Invader 5R

The team Aussie Invader, based in Perth, Australia, plans to get into the 1000mph Club with a rocket-powered mean machine that can do 0-1,000 mph in 20 seconds. Headed by Australian speed record holder Rosco McGlashan, who will also be the driver, the team aims to put this plan into action sometime in 2016.
It’s very easy to understand that achieving this is no easy task. That’s why the car is custom-made, with parts made of some pretty hard to find materials. For example, the wheels are shaped from solid blocks of aerospace-grade aluminum and each one weighs 140kg. It’s not much if you realize they are spinning 10,000 times per minute at the car's maximum speed.

The team is building the 4 million dollar car with help coming from experts in aerodynamics, engineering, rocket propulsion and manufacture. If you think this is expensive, know that their British arch-enemies from Bloodhound have spent tens of millions of dollars on their project so far.

Most of the Australian car’s parts are built and tested with the use of computer aids such as CAD and CFD. Thanks to this, the human error factor is missing from the equation.

According to Phys, Australia currently holds the world water speed record and it would be an amazing accomplishment for the country to hold the land record as well.

The Aussie Invader 5R has 52 feet in length, and fully fueled with Rocket-Hydrogen Peroxide/Kerosene, it weighs a staggering 9.2 tonnes. The 200,000 horsepower "engine" burns 2.8 tonnes of fuel in 25 seconds with the throttle pushed all the way down.

A very interesting fact is that right after the car exists the measured mile, the engine must be shut down in a gradual way or else both the driver and the Aussie Invader 5R would suffer from severe negative “G” forces.

The location where this speed record breaking attempt will take place is yet under investigation, but it is known that the car needs 27 kilometers (17 miles) to reach its maximum velocity of 1,000mph.
