Audi Wins RCN Green Challenge

German manufacturer Audi announced yesterday it managed to win the second heat of the RCN Green Challenge”, a fuel efficiency competition held over the weekend on the Northern Loop of the Nurburgring track.

The feat was accomplished with two Audi TT 2.0 TFSI models, which finished first and fourth. In the four-lap race, the two Audi's averaged a fuel consumption of only 1.6 liters per each lap of 20.832 kilometers (12.94 miles), beating the city consumption used as benchmark by some 28 percent.

In words we can all understand, the two TTs achieved an average fuel consumption of 7.7 l/100 km (30.55 mpg) on the track. The two cars which entered the contest were series-production 200 hp (147 kW) Audi TT 2.0 TFSI models approved for normal street traffic and equipped with six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

Held for the first time this year, the RCN Green Challenge was intended to combine speed and performance with low fuel consumption figures. The goal was not to see which car manages the fastest lap, but also who does so without consuming tons of fuel.

The target time was based on the power-to-weight ratio of each vehicle and ranged from 10 to 15 minutes per lap. The drivers were challenged with meeting their target times as precisely as possible. This factor was evaluated along with their average consumption compared to the NEDC figure for the city cycle.

The 2.0 TFSI fitted on the TT provides power outputs in between 170 and 265 hp. For the top of the range engine, the TTS Coupe equipped with the S-tronic dual-clutch transmission accelerates from naught to sixty in 5.2 seconds.
