Audi to Expand Its Vehicle Range in China

Audi, the premium brand in the Volkswagen Group's portfolio, announced that it plans to expand its model range on the Chinese market, in order to maintain its leading position in the country’s premium vehicle segment, as Gasgoo reports.

Audi has set itself a sales target of 200,000 units for the current year in China, after the company managed to sell 160,000 units last year in the world’s greatest market. The carmaker has registered positive sales results so far this year, as it’s Q1 report shows a total sales figure of 51,449 units, a 77 percent surge as compared to the first quarter of last year.

The automaker expects China to overcome Germany and become its largest market in the following years, so it has decided to increase its vehicle range in the country. Audi plans this to match its global line-up by 2020.

The carmaker’s current Chinese range includes three domestically produced models: the long wheelbase versions of the A4 and A6 sedans (A4L and A6L) and the Q5 medium size SUV. The rest of the models are imported: the A5/S5 coupes, A8/S8 flagship saloons, Q7 full size SUV, TT/TTS sports cars and the R8 supercar.

"The Chinese market should have whatever products the German market has," Johannes Thammer, general manager of the Audi sales division at FAW-Volkswagen (the company's Chinese joint venture), was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

Audi plans to reach an annual sales volume of 250,000 units on the Chinese market by 2012 or 2013 and will increase its production capacity in the country in order to reach this goal.
