Audi in the UK has announced a newly revised 1.6 TDI version of its the pint-sized A1. With a CO2 output of just 99g/km, this baby Audi dodges the London Congestion Charge, and returns an impressive 74.3mpg (UK) while it’s at it. As was the case with the previous version, the achievement of these figures is largely aided by engine start-stop and energy recuperation systems.
The old emissions figures of the frugal 1.6 TDI stood at a very respectable 105 grams per kilometer, but the A1 just couldn’t dodge paying a small price when entering Britain’s grid-locked capital. In addition, with 62 mph appearing in 10.5 seconds, and a top speed of 118mph, performance isn’t exactly lacking either.
The A1 1.6 TDI is available in three trim levels - SE, Sport and S line - and prices range between £14,480 and £17,865 OTR. That doesn’t sound like a lot for a cute, well-built Audi that comes as standard with engine start-stop function, energy recuperation, alloy wheels, air conditioning, single CD audio system with MP3 compatibility and ESP with latest differential lock system. The S-Line Exterior package sweetens up the A1's body with chiseled sill tops, a larger roof spoiler, a more concave front bumper with side air-vents and a new rear bumper with a diffuser.
As it dips below the 100 g/km level, the A1 is also exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) from year 2 onwards, as the duty bandings currently stand. Additionally, the majority of A1 models, including the 1.6 TDI, are already duty-free in the first year of ownership.
