We’ve got some new information concerning the second generation R8 and it’s straight from an Audi official. Apparently, the company is thinking of giving the next-gen R8 a smaller turbocharged engine.
At this year’s Geneva Auto Show, Audi technical chief Ulrich Hackenberg said that since in some countries there is a need to reduce the capacity of the engines, the company is thinking of solutions for these particular markets. Thus, the reason why Audi is thinking of smaller turbocharged engines for the upcoming R8 partly has to do with emissions and efficiency.

We must say that this won’t be an easy job as we’re talking about going from 10 cylinders to as little as 4 (maybe). So, the company needs to really think things through before acting upon it. For the moment, Hackenberg stated that the tweaked V8 and V10 engines will find their way to the Audi R8, the V10 being similar to the Huracán's new 5.2-litre powerplant.

Since the R8 is sharing underpinnings with the Lamborghini Huracan, this means the Audi model will get an innovative rear firewall as well as a centre tunnel made from a single carbonfibre moulding that weighs 50-60kg. Furthermore, the said Audi will be an all-wheel-drive and it will also be offered with a seven-speed dual clutch-gearbox.

Concerning the R8 e-tron, Hackenberg stated that the company is thinking of resurrecting the model, a decision being due ‘within weeks.” It seems that they are slowly making progress and have managed to improve some of the problems.
