In spite of the extensive cost-cutting program that is applied across the Volkswagen Group, the leaders of the corporation have granted Audi and Porsche their permission to pursue separate ways concerning electric vehicles.
The decision to allow Audi and Porsche develop individual solutions for electric cars is costly, as each brand will have its research program and resulting electric automobile platform, but it was motivated by a desire to have different characters for the upcoming models.

The only significant thing that will be shared by Audi and Porsche concerning electric vehicles will be a platform that will have its batteries mounted as low as possible within the floor. Otherwise, Audi and Porsche will have different electric motors, as well as separate configurations concerning their powertrains.

There is a chance that Audi and Porsche will share other components, like controllers and various parts that are unseen without disassembling the vehicle, but the platforms will be different. Audi and Porsche currently share 3.0-liter V6 diesel engines, as well as other components that have been shared withing the Volkswagen Group.

As we previously noted in articles regarding modular platforms, technical solutions like these bring cost savings on a global scale for automakers that employ them.

Considering Volkswagen’s recent cost-cutting efforts, one would think that Porsche and Audi would be obligated to share components for new designs, but the leaders of the VW Group have decided to listen to the brand officials that requested different routes. The Brits at Autocar have talked to high-ranking officials within the Volkswagen Group, which have revealed this insight to them.

Michael Steiner, Porsche’s new chief of Research and Development, has revealed to Autocar that the two brands will work together on some aspects, but the designs will be different. According to Mr. Steiner, Audi will opt for a solution that will be suitable for high volumes, while Porsche will provide a more sporty option.

Apparently, Audi’s electric vehicles will use three electric motors, while Porsche will have a solution that would involve two motors. In Audi’s case, one engine will be at the front, while two will be in the rear. Porsche will have one motor per axle.
