The Ingolstadt carmaker has announced that it is preparing its international production network for electric mobility and that large-series production of its first all-electric SUV, known as the Q6, will begin in Brussels starting 2018.
Apart from building the all-new Q6 at the site in Belgium’s capital city, the German carmaker plans to also make its own batteries. Therefore, the company will move the production of its A1 from Belgium to Martorell in Spain, and the Q3, which is currently produced in Spain, will be built in Gyor, Hungary. The site in Hungary already produces four Audi models, including the A3 Sedan, the A3 Cabriolet, the TT and the TT Roadster.

The new model distribution will enhance our production efficiency and strengthen all of the sites involved. It will allow us to utilize further synergies within the Volkswagen Group and to bundle key competencies,” stated Rupert Stadler, Chairman of The Board of Management of Audi AG.

As of 2018, Audi Brussels will build the first battery-electric SUV, having the Audi e-tron quattro concept study, presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, as a starting point.

The concept's reveal was a clear sign that Audi wanted to show that big off-roaders can rely on electricity even more than you might think. With the e-tron quattro concept, the German carmaker went nuts and reinvented almost everything except the wheel. Mirrors were replaced by cameras, aerodynamic elements came out of nowhere, and the cabin screamed “the future is here.”

When talking about the specs, the car was powered by three electric motors that provided a total output of 320 kW (429 hp), or 370 kW (496 hp) when boost is activated.

Thanks to its 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, the concept SUV would sprint from a standstill to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds and have a top speed of 130.5 mph (210 km/h).

The car also featured a 95-kWh battery pack, which Audi says that a 150-kW DC fast charger can fill up in around 50 minutes.

Audi hasn’t forgotten about the toys, so it fitted the e-tron quattro concept with a solar roof that generates 62 miles (100 km) of extra range per year, and with OLED lights, the first time they’ve used this innovative technology.
