Bentley and Audi are working together to develop a new V8 powerplant, as whatcar writes. The upcoming engine will power the facelifted Continental GT (it will make its way under the hood of the vehicle in late 2011) and will also be used for certain go-fast Audi vehicles (we expect it to become the favorite toy of the future RS vehicles).
The V8 unit will have a capacity of 4 liters and will be focused on offering a high level of efficiency. The engine will allow both brands to lower their average range CO2 emissions. The unit will offer a 40 percent reduction in C02 emissions, compared to the W12 engine used by the Continental GT. In the Bentley vehicle, the engine will send its power to the road via a 40:60 rear-biased all-wheel-drive system.
Each brand will offer a special character to its version of the engine. This means that Bentley’s will offer a hefty mid-range torque.
“We are adapting it four our purposes so that it delivers Bentley driving characteristics,” Brian Gush, Bentley’s director of chassis and powertrain was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
The two companies have not revealed if the upcoming engine will use forced induction or not. However, it was mentioned that it will use a unconventional layout.
