Audi A8 Coupe Wants to Start a Luxury Two-Door War with Mercedes

Try as they might, the Audi A8 is never going to be on the same level as the S-Class. It's not that Ingolstadt are making inferior cars, just that Mercedes-Benz's flagship has a sort of… halo aura, a mixture of rich and powerful customers, excellent technology and lots of heritage. That aura today surrounds a replacement for the CL-Class, called the S-Class Coupe.
If Audi ever wants to make the A8 into an all-time great, it also needs a two-door coupe. What would that look like? You need only look at the rendering above, which was created by X-Tomi design. A chopped roof, lowered suspension and sleeker lines define the svelte kin of the A8 sedan.

OK, it looks like an A5 with the front end of an A8, but you guys get the general idea: it's possible and it makes sense. Audi may now be ideally placed to finally take on the S-Class. Matrix LED headlights and new 4-liter twin-turbo V8s are just some examples of areas where the makers of quattro are leading the charge.

The brand is also at its strongest now, thanks to strong demand from China, back-to-back Le Mans victories and association with major football players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo that drive Audis.

Giving meaning to an otherwise made-up rendering and purely speculative story are rumors of a new flagship from Audi, the A9. The latest rumors suggest this would be ready by 2017, based on an advanced modular aluminum platform. Of course, rumors of the A9 have been around since before the 2008 subprime banking crisis in America, so we're quietly reserved and hopeful at the prospect of an RS9, chasing down the S63 AMG Coupe some time in the future.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
