Each year, thousands Golf GTI fans come to Worthersee, a town in Austria, to check out the latest turbo mods and custom exhausts for their TSI engines. However, this year, Audi is probably going to steal the show with this car, the A3 clubsport quattro concept, which looks like it has at least a million horsepower.
Just kidding, it only has 525 horsepower, which is actually normal for any tuned Golf GTI these days. Wanting to outgun the concept car competition, Audi pulled the boring 2-liter turbo out of the S3 body and fitted a 2.5-liter five-cylinder from RS Q3. The mill was then extensively tuned to the point where it produces 212 horsepower per liter and 600 Nm of torque, more than some V8s.
The Audi A3 clubsport quattro concept accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h (192.6 mph). This performance is helped by the quattro all-wheel drive system and a strengthened twin-clutch S tronic gearbox. In laymen's terms, this Audi is as fast as some Ferraris.
Proudly displaying its quattro heritage, the clubsport A3 has massively flared bumpers and a huge black grille. Compared to the S3 sedan that it's based on, it sits 10mm lower to the ground on 21-inch wheels with extra-wide 275/25 R21 performance rubber.
Wearing a Magnetic Blue exterior paint scheme with price, the A3 concept will surely attract the Worthersee crowd thanks to its large carbon fiber components, which include a front blade and side sills and rear diffuser. Even the advanced Matrix LED headlight technology has subtly found its way onto the car, together with race-inspired bucket seats with four-point harnesses.
Do we like it? Well… yes, but in the same way we like a well tuned Golf. It's something built for the Audi hot hatch fans, for the people who listen to drum and bass and like neon colors. Look for a production version to come out… never. But if Audi decided to keep the 2.5 TFSI for the next RS3 and offer it as a sedan as well, you could tune it to this extent.
